Sydney James Muller was born in 1885 at Lambeth, London. He enlisted with 23 (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment, listing previous experience of five years with the 4th Battalion, Queen's Royal Regiment, Territorial Force. Appointed Lance-Corporal on 22 July 1915, promoted Corporal on 8 December 1915 and Orderly Room Sergeant on 13 December. Transferring to 32nd Battalion, London Regiment Muller received a 'mention' on 24 February 1917. Having been briefly attached to the 29th Battalion, London Regiment he relinquished his rank as Orderly Room Sergeant, reverting to Sergeant. Muller transferred to the Army Service Corps on 19 April 1918, serving with the 226th Mixed Brigade and appointed Acting Staff Sergeant on 24 July 1918. Invalided from the trenches on 17 July 1917, he was noted to be suffering from 'derangement of the knee and nervous disability'. Muller is further entitled to the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals and the Silver War Badge (no. 513441).
