1914-15 Star (3) (L.4480. H. E. Doe. O.C.3., R.N.; 345086, F. R. Attrill. Shpt.1. R.N.; 343531, J. A. O. Hodge. Shpt.1., R.N.), very fine (3)
Harry Edward Doe was born at Fareham on 26 August 1892 and was a porter upon his joining the Royal Navy on 9 May 1913. During the Great War he served aboard Birmingham from 3 February 1914-20 November 1916. Doe would have been on duty on 9 August 1914 when she spotted U-15, whose engines had failed as she lay stopped on the surface in heavy fog, off Fair Isle. The crew of Birmingham could hear hammering from inside the boat from attempted repairs, and so fired on her but missed. As the U-boat began to dive, she rammed her, cutting her in two. U-15 went down with all hands, the first U-boat loss to an enemy warship. Birmingham also sank two German merchant ships that year and took part in the Battle of Heligoland on 28 August, and the Battle of Dogger Bank in January 1915. She was also present at the Battle of Jutland and suffered splinter damage during the course of the action.
Doe served aboard Spitfire from 6 December 1916-7 November 1918, during which she helped in the rescue of survivors from the Hospital Ship Rhodesia which was torpedoed 160 miles off Fastnet by U-82 on 12 September 1918. Doe was demobilised on 10 May 1920.
Frank Rodney Attrill was born at Devonport on 21 August 1887 and joined the Royal Navy on 21 August 1905. He served aboard Dreadnought from 1 June 1914-30 October 1917, during which time she rammed and sank the U-29, skippered by K/Lt Otto Weddigen - of U-9 fame - on 18 March 1915. Attrill was pensioned on 20 August 1927 but was recalled for further service during the Second World War.
John Aaran Curry Hodge was born at Honicknowle, Devon on 6 May 1885 and was a schoolboy upon his joining the Royal Navy on 12 July 1900. He was shore pensioned on 15 August 1925 and returned for further service during the Second World War, being invalided on 9 August 1943.
