Manilal Gandhi
1954, 1956 South Africa airletters with typed messages from the son and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Manilal Gandhi (1892-1956) was the second son of Gandhi, who lived at Phoenix, Natal from 1917 and edited "Indian Opinion", a Gujarati-English weekly publication. In the 6d airletter addressed to Mrs Tyson in England, he has erroneously added a further 6d in stamps - the rate to India. He writes a significant message about his father's life philosophy
"I have not the least doubt that man's ultimate goal is to fight for real freedom and that is the freedom of the soul. My father's life long struggle was for that and it was because he had realised and succeeded in freeing the soul that he succeeded in freeing a great country from the clutches of a great Empire". The lengthy letter is signed "Manilal Gandhi".
A further 6d airletter written in 1956 to the same correspondent from the office of "Indian Opinion, Durban" apologises for the delay in responding following the death of Manilal Gandhi, his father, and is signed by "Arun Gandhi" (b1934).
Manilal Gandhi was imprisoned on several occasions by the Colonial Government for protesting against unjust legislation. He was one of the initial 78 marchers to accompany Gandhi on the 1930 Salt March, for which he was jailed.
