Napoleonic Wars
St. Helena
1819 ( May and June) Manuscript accounts kept by J. Cole, listed on a narrow folio (3 pages) with the original silk ribbon, recording the supply of food, books and spirits to various Islanders, at the time of Napoleon's exile on the Island. The charges relate to "stuffing a saddle, a cow bought at auction, two lanthorns for Mr Balcombe, raffle for Capt Rous's horse, Midwife attending Mary…" etc.
Joseph Cole was the Postmaster at St. Helena and was associated with Balcombe, Fowler and Co. Napoleon was first housed at the Balcombe's home, The Briars, before being removed to Longwood in December 1815.
A fascinating insight into Island life during the period that Napoleon was in exile.
