Hugh Tyrwhitt was born on 14 July 1856, the second surviving son of Sir Henry Thomas Tyrwhitt, 3rd Baronet and Harriet Wilson, 12th Baroness Berners. Commissioned Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy in June 1876, he served as Flag Lieutenant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet and served with the Naval Brigade in Sudan and latterly in the Nile Expedition.

Tyrwhitt was appointed to the command of H.M.S. Renown on 19 March 1900, flag ship to Admiral Sir John Fisher, Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet, before being made Private Naval Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty in October 1902. In 1905 he returned to the command of Renown and escorted the Prince and Princess of Wales to India. He died on 26 October 1907, having been made Naval ADC to the King on 1 October. His son was Lord Berners; sold together with letter from the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood confirming C235 was awarded to Tyrwhitt, dated 22 September 1975.
