1850 (15 Nov.) stampless entire letter to Paris "Via London" and "per Thomas Hughes", manuscript "Registered" in large letters, marked "1/2" later replaced by "45" with the London wide crown/"registered" in red and a fine strike of the boxed "colonies/&c art 13." in red and Calais transit (10.5) in red; the reverse with faint Geelong despatch (9.12) and London transit (9.5). A fine and important letter.


This is the earliest known registered letter from Australia to France as well as the earliest usage of the Anglo-French accountancy handstamp from Australia to a non-British destination

Pays 6d. for double ship letter rate, 1/2d. for London (8d. postage plus 6d. registration). and 45 decimes for France. The Article 13 handstamp was applied on underpaid mail, registered or unregistered, via London to or through France.
