1842 (30 Mar.) entire letter to Virginia "Viâ Bristol Steam Ship Great Western" and "Registered Letter No.7 to Bristol" and the rate mark "P1/8" and manuscript "27" (U.S. arrival charge) plus a superb strike of the Cirencester despath c.d.s. and New York Ship transit c.d.s. (17.4) in red. A fine and attractive letter. Matched with the accompanying original receipt (type 2) number 7 with the superb Cirencester c.d.s. with the recipient's details and signed by the postmaster.
A highly desirable and unique matched pair, this is believed to be the only surviving item of registered mail carried on the 'Great Western', a very early transatlantic registered letter and the only letter with matched receipt.
