1852 (20 July) entire to the London Missionary Society marked "prepaid" and "Registered" in red ink with rate marks of "1/6" and "2/6" and bears a very good strike of the large crown/"registered" applied in London, the reverse with London arrival c.d.s. (9.9); horizontal fold and some peripheral ageing.


This is the earliest recorded item of registered mail from South Africa`

Pays 8d. inland postage, 4d. port charge, 6d. for British registraion. The first recorded reference to registration of letters appears in 1854 almanacs, this letter proves that registration of mail was operational in 1852
