1850 (23 Dec.) neat blue wrapper to Kendal bearing 1/- light green, die 2 (good to very large margins all round) just tied by "436" numeral with a faint Lancaster despatch c.d.s. in greenish blue and Kendal arrival (24.12), marked "Registered" and numbered "1935". Superb in every respect. Cat. £1900

A heavyweight wrapper paying 6d. postage (under 3oz.) and 6d. registration. The 1/- stamp, the first high value, was intended for prepayment of letter to America; it was only officially sanctioned for use on registered mail after 1854
