1840 Penny Black Covers
1841 (20 Jan.) wrapper to Bath bearing 1d. Black, plate 5, JG (exceptional margins, enormous on three sides showing a fragment of the stamp to the right, good to very close at left) well tied by an orange-red Maltese Cross and a faint strike of "Strand W.O." in black; marked with large script "Registered Letter" (the ink just onto the adhesive), with the London Paid despatch datestamp and manuscript "1/-" for the registration. There is a vertical filing crease which is well clear of the adhesive. The flap endorsed "Strand W O" in black ink. Copy of R.P.S. Certificate (1998).
A highly important and desirable cover being the earliest example of a Penny Black (or any adhesive) used on a registered cover
