1841 (15 Jan.) a delightful and highly important entire letter to Congleton marked "Registered Post Prepaid" with small "No 96" added by the postmaster, rated "1/2" and with a fine strike of Lombard Street Maltese Cross datestamp in red. Free from any filing creases and the letter indicates that this originally contained seven bank notes totalling £919.2.5d.


This magnificent cover is the earliest known example of a British Inland registered letter
