1858 (22 Apr.) entire letter from Augustine Heard in Hong Kong to Archer and Bull in New York "Via Marseilles" bearing manuscript "2/8" rate mark in ink, handstruck "45" applied in New York with the Am Packet arrival c.d.s. (30.6), the reverse with Hong Kong (22.4) and London (12.6) c.d.s.; horizontal filing crease, otherwise fresh and fine.


Aside from the usual business content, the letter includes, "... The Chinese traders at Canton, anticipating some hostile proceedings towards foreigners upon the arrival of the new Governor General, who is expected from the north about the 10th prox are very anxious to move off what stocks of teas and other export produce they have remaining on their hands ... All the foreign ambassadors have left Shanghae for the north; and should the Allied Powers carry into effect their reported intentions of stopping the supplies for Pekin serious apprehensions are entertained that the Chinese will take some retaliatory measures at the Treaty Ports."
