The Second Opium War
Cessation of Postal Service to Canton
Incoming Mail
1856 (24 Dec.) entire from Russell in Boston to Sturgis in Canton sent by "overland mail" with Boston Paid c.d.s. (22.10), handstruck "38", manuscript "43" in ink and London transit c.d.s. (3.11), the flap with a fair strike of the Hong Kong c.d.s. (24.12). Fresh.

In mid-December 1856 a fire destroyed much of the factory area in Canton, this did affect the normal postal services in Canton. The continued hostilities and civilian withdrawal from Canton prompted the Hong Kong postal authority to cease the delivery of civilian mail to Canton. A postal notice date 18 December 1856 included, "... no letters etc. can be forwarded to Canton unless such as may be prepaid and addressed to members of Her Majesty's Service."
