Naval and Military Correspondence
H.M.S. 'Cornwallis': 1843 (14 Oct. - 9 Nov.) entire letter headed "H.M.S. Cornwallis Hong Kong" to Sir George Armytage Bart , Dewsbury "By the overland Mail via Marseilles", rated "2/10" with "INDIA" in large oval and a neat strike of Dewsbury arrival c.d.s. (9.2) on the reverse. Some rather heavy folding creases and a few reinforcements.
The letter includes, "... I have had this letter laying bye my desk for some weeks without a single opportunity of sending it but in a few days a steamer starts for Bombay direct with the Supplementary Treaty ... China is very tranquil and the Consuls have all been established at the respective ports. Last week however nearly the whole of the European factories at Canton were burnt to the ground but it is supposed by accident. The 'Dido' has returned from Canton & is now here. She has brought down part of the ransom money which is going to India by the 'Spiteful' steamer in a few days.". An interesting insight into how things were progressing after the Treaty
Sir George Armytage (1819-99) was the 5th Baronet of Kirklees
