Prelude to the Northern Expedition
1841 (17 Aug.) entire letter from Turner & Co in Macao to John Gladstone & Co, Liverpool "pr overland Mail" and "via Marseilles", rated "2/8" and with a good strike of "INDIA" in large oval. the flap with "Recd Bombay 26th Sept 1841 R S & Co", London and Liverpool datestamps (7.11); vertical filing fold and some light ageing.
The letter includes, "... We have been in correspondence through Captain Elliot with the Portuguese Government for a reduction of the duties charged; this has been refused, but Sir Henry Pottinger has still the papers by him and may detain some redress .... The fleet proceeds to the North immediately - the particular destination not yet made public. Sir Henry sent up a letter to Canton the other day by Steamer 'Nemesis' enclosing one per 'Pekin' and intimating that a reply would be called for very shortly at the Peiho. Considerable excitement is said to prevail in Canton, markets exceedingly dull ..."
Capt. Elliot left Hong Kong on 10th August on S.S. 'Clyde' and was replaced by Sir Henry Pottinger (former political agent of the East India Company) as the new plenipotentiary
1841年8月17日澳門Turner & Co. 經馬賽寄英國利物浦John Gladstone &Co. 信函, 註有 "pr overland mail" 句, 遞送費為2s 8d, 蓋有㰐圓型 "INDIA" 戳, 封舌上寫有 "Recd Bombay 29th Sepy 1841 R S & Co" 字句, 另蓋有11月7日倫敦及利物浦日戳. 函有摺痕及有些老化. 信函中提及璞鼎查接但㠖律為香港行政官及駐華商務總監及英方全權代表後, 立即出兵攻佔厦門, 定海和寧波等地的軍事行動.
