1841 (19-23 Mar.) entire letter from Turner & Co in Macao to John Gladstone & Co, Liverpool "pr overland Mail via Marseilles", rated "2/8" with "INDIA" in large oval, the flap with "received Bombay 24 May 1841 R S & Co" and part Liverpool arrival datestamp (2.8); a small segment of the flap missing bearing the arrival docketing (and possibly the London transit c.d.s.). Vertical filing crease. Marked at the top of the letter as being carried on H.M.S Melville.


The letter includes, "HMS Melville of 74 guns will sail for England in a few days time.". Later he adds, "... that it is known here of the proceedings of the Plenipotentiary and of the force both naval and military at his disposal. You will observe the Captain Elliot's latest circular is dated the 16th inst. but pressure of a later date have reached Macao which would lead us shortly to expect another announcement that military possession has been taken of the provincial city, if not indeed that some part of the force has been moved still higher up river...". Very little mail was carried by H.M.S. 'Melville' (or any other H.M. Ship), rare thus


1841年3月19-23日由澳門Turner & Co. 寄利物浦John Gladstone & Co. 信函, 其上有"pr overland Mail via Marseilles" 字樣, 遞送費為"2/8", 並有大㰐圓形 "INDIA" 戳, 封舌上 "received Bombay 24 May 1841 R S & Co", 及因封舌不完整有缺失, 故只保留了部份的利物浦8月2日到達戳. (可能還有倫敦中轉c.d.s.). 函有垂直摺痕. 並在信件頂部標上" 以 H.M.S Melville 攜帶". 這封信內容大概為: “擁有 74 門砲的 HMS Melville 將在幾天內駛向英格蘭”, 後來他補充道, “...並知道全權代表的議事程序以及由他支配的海軍和軍事力量. 你會看到義律上尉的最新通告日期為 16 日, 但基於情况, 稍後時間已經抵達澳門, 這將導致我們很快會得到宣布軍事佔領另一城市的消息..."
