First Opium War
The Kowloon Incident
Waiting for the Expeditionary Force
1840 (30 Apr.) long letter written by John Silverlock at Macao. Here he writes, "... Of local news, I have nothing to tell you, the place is horribly quiet and dull. We have heard some indirect news from England as late as 1 January, nothing particular of interest and no letter yet arrived. We continue to get confirmatory accounts from India of the very large force both naval and military now being prepared for the Chinese War! The sooner they come the better it is all very well to make a show in fact the only way to bring the Chinese to their senses is to show them what can be done if circumstances order it necessary, however, I apprehend with waste of powder and show beyond the taking of the Bogue Forts, and still noted strongly to the opinion why I can't exactly explain, that the trade will be resumed next season; the British government will make this in my humble opinion the first point to be gained, the probable loss of revenue will be staring in the face of the negotiators - we must wait patiently till then matters are all settled for us ..."
