Slaves and Slavery
1806 (Nov.) and 1807 (9 Apr.) entire letters ex the same correspondence from Suttons to Mainz near Dundee, variously rated with both showing, on reverse, "clarendon/ja" and light "jamaica" F1 datestamps and arrival datestamp (29.12), contents including "I am very much alarmed at the idea of this abolition of the slave trade. If such an event takes place it will undoubtedly oblige thousands of adventurers to relinquish the West Indies", the second including "The idea of the abolition of the slave trade taking place induces young beginners in that traffic to purchase while in their power.....I have purchased a few negroes lately and to enable me to pay for them have drawn on you. If, however the abolitions bill passes, it will I am afraid oblige many of us to sink". An interesting pair. Photo
