Mail Forwarded Through a Third Country
1848 (1 Apr.) envelope from Bethlehem "via Baltimore per Brig Glamorgan or other first vessel to Jamaica", taken to Halifax, Nova Scotia to find a Packet ship to Mandeville Post Office, Jamaica and showing "10" cents and "paid" in red pre-paid to Jamaica, charged "2/8" on arrival suggesting a double rate letter forwarded from Halifax to UK and then back to Jamaica, this equating to 1/- double to ½oz. Packet letter charge plus 4d. Jamaica inland postage, across join on reverse, "ud-states/halifax" 7 April datestamp used on mail arriving at Halifax from the U.S.; most unusual. Photo
