Spanish Treasure Ship Letter
1687 (8 Oct.) entire letter from Matt Gregory to his brother, marked as being "Handbrought Katherine Gregory of Jamaica Borne 1687" and with recipients note as to the writer and content referring to a local Spanish wreck with 300 tons of plate and gold, "The wreck that is found not far off this place"; a couple of creases, otherwise a fine and very interesting early letter accompanied by fully typed transcript. Note: In 1686 Christopher Monck, 2nd. Duke of Albemarle, was a major investor in a treasure seeking expedition headed by William Phips. Phips located the wreck of the Spanish Treasure ship "Nuestra Senora de la Conception" in February 1687. The letter notes "the Duke of Albemarle's share came to Seventy Thousand pounds or more"
