Great Britain
1841-53 One Penny Red-Brown
Plate 89: large "turned"cover, originally addressed to Reverend Barker in Wells from London (MY 26 1849) weighing up to eleven ounces, paying the 1s.10d. rate, franked with twenty-two examples (IA-JG block of fourteen, KG-LG vertical pair, KA-KB, KC-KD KE-KF horizontal pairs); the clergymen most likely received enclosed in the envelope the stamps to return the shipping, turned the cover sent it back from Wells (28 May 1849) using twenty-two stamps from the same block (IJ-KL and KJ-LL blocks of six, IH-JI and KH-LI blocks of four and LD-LE horizontal pair); some faults as to be expected with such a large franking though with many stamps fine/very fine and with good margins. An incredible show piece "turned" cover and most likely the largest "turned" franking of all the line-engraved issues. Photo
