Sekukuni Wars, 1876-1879
1878 (11 May) soldier´s envelope from Lydenburg to England, headed "From 36 Bde/458 Pte. J.H. Beardsell 1/13th. P.A.L.I." (Prince Albert's Light Infantry), countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1877 imperforate 1d. red on orange lightly cancelled "13" in concentric rings with despatch c.d.s. at left, Cape Town c.d.s. (25.5) and handstruck "1d" alongside the adhesive, the reverse with Cape Packet Plymouth (21.6) and Burnley (22.6) c.d.s.; fine and attractive. Photo

Note: The first war against Sekukuni, chief of the Bapedi tribe in the western part of the Transvaal, was fought in 1876, and was inconclusive. An uneasy truce followed with British troops deployed along the border of his territory. The second war against Sekukuni of 1878 and 1879 was another relatively low key affair, being interrupted by the Zulu War, with the British troops involved being redeployed to Zululand.
