Mail to Germany
1881 (28 June) triple rate envelope from Pretoria to Berlin, bearing 1878 6d. block of six (one defective) cancelled by "1" in concentric rings, showing red crayon "7½" accountancy mark, despatch c.d.s. and, on reverse, Durban (9.7) and London (8.8) transit datestamps. Most unusual. Photo
Note: The rate to Germany was 1/1½d. per half ounce, but only 3/- instead of 3/4½d. was paid. It went via Natal, but the rate via Natal was the same as via the Cape Colony at that time. The rate to UK was 1/- per half ounce, seemingly the triple rate was confused with that to the UK.
