1896 (28 Aug.) Mashonaland 1½d. card (light vertical crease) headed "Devils Pass" and addressed to an Artillery Captain in the War Ministry at Copenhagen, uprated with 1896 Large Arms 1d., both cancelled by "umtali/mashonaland" c.d.s. dated 1 September. The card was from a member of Alderson's Mounted Infantry who landed at Beira on 28 July, travelled through Portuguese territory in civilian clothes, and reformed at Umtali to march 170 miles to Salisbury. The message mentioned Makoni, a chief whose village was close to Rusape just to the north of Devil's Pass. A very scarce item from the Matabele rebellion. Photo
