1885 envelope ex the "Methuen" correspondence to his wife at Poole's Hotel in Cape Town, marked "no stamps procurable", showing "barkly/g.w" c.d.s. (22.6), manuscript "2d" with, on reverse, Kimberley(22.6) and part arrival (24.6) datestamps; envelope with crease at right and part of flap missing. Photo

Note: Field Marshall Baron Methuen (1845-1932) served in a number of campaigns including the Ashanti (1873-74), Egypt (1882), Warren Expedition to Bechuanaland ((1884-85), Tirah (1897) and the Boer War, when he commanded the 1st Division. He later served as Governor of Malta from 1915-19.
