Bechuanaland
The Warren Expedition
Sir Charles Warren was ordered in 1885, to lead an expedition to the Republics of Stellaland and Goshen to force annexation upon them. Three Mounted Rifle Regiments were raised specially for this Bechuanaland Field Force. Weekly English mail was carried from the field by a military postal service to Expedition Headquarters at Barkly.
1885 blue "On Her Majesty's Service." (deleted) envelope from Capt. Gamble of the Diamond Field Horse to Exeter, headed "on active service no stamps available", showing "barkly/g.w" c.d.s. (3.5), manuscript "1" (shilling) overstruck by barred oval "B16", circular-framed "6d" applied at Plymouth and, on reverse, Cape Town (6.5) and Exeter (26.5) datestamps; the envelope part of flap missing.
