1898 "one/penny" on 3/- Provisional
There was a temporary shortage of 1d. stamps for internal postage early in 1898 due to the loss of a shipment of stamps which left Chinde on 25 January. As an interim measure 33,600 examples of the 3/- were overprinted locally "one penny". A total of 33,420 stamps were sold; nevertheless examples are very rare on cover. Many examples are found with pink fibres on reverse - the sheets being interleaved with pink blotting paper.
Varieties
A single with variety "penn" (with albino "y"), cancelled by favour with "fort anderson/b.c.a." c.d.s. for 1 January 1899, fine. Rare. S.G. 53b, £4,500. Photo
