Lot: 26

Nyasaland
1895 Provisional
Early in 1895, due to a perceived shortage of 1d. stamps, a provisional surcharge was proposed. It was hoped the surcharge could be carried out at the Blantyre Mission Press and an unsuccessful trial was made. This single trial sheet of 60 stamps was surcharged twice. A further 5,940 stamps (99 sheets) were sent to Cape Town for surcharging.
Owing to the inability to surcharge stamps locally, recourse was made to the bisecting of 2d. stamps pending the return of the surcharged stamps from Cape Town.
