These were available up to 31 January 1923 when they ceased to be valid. On 17 December 1920 the League of Nations conferred a Mandate of Administration of the territory on His Britannic Majesty, to be carried out by the government in South Africa. The Mandate came into force on 1 January 1923, on which date the first South African stamps overprinted for use in the territory were issued

1916 (Apr.) envelope from Karibib to Windhoek bearing 2½d. pair with "karibib" registration handstamp in violet, censor label and boxed handstamp, 1916 (June) envelope from Swakopmund franked at 7d. and with registration label, 1917 (Apr.) from Luderitzbucht to Keetmanshoop franked at 1/8d. and with "Luderitzbucht" registration handstamp in violet, and 1918 envelope from Luderitzbucht addressed locally and bearing 2d. and 3d. with "new moon" variety and with "Luderitzbucht" registration handstamp alongside oval-framed "r"
