1869 (22 Feb.) envelope to USA, bearing Mauritius 9d. dull purple vertical pair placed sideways and tied by "B64" obliterator, showing red manuscript "1/1½", "2/cents" accountancy h.s. and Boston Paid entry c.d.s. with, on reverse, Seychelles and Bedford arrival datestamps; the envelope with tear at lower left and piece torn away at top left. Rare. Photo

Note: This cover was carried by the Barque "Merlin", a whaler based in the Seychelles from 1868-72. John Hicks was a shipowner in New Bedford.
