Lot: 14

(x) New South Wales
1850-51 Sydney Views
Three Pence
Yellow-green on greyish wove paper, double print, one albino, small to large margins, cancelled by Sydney obliterator, fine. The only recorded example and the most famous error of the Sydney Views. RPSV Certificate (2008). S.G. 42. Photo

Note: This error was first recorded by Robson Lowe in the "London Philatelist" in August 1957. It was caused by two sheets of paper going through the press at one time and both receiving the impression from the plate, only the top sheet receiving the colour. The blank sheet at bottom was then passed through the press for a second time receiving the impression of the stamp in colour. Robson Lowe commented that "this is the first time I have come across such an error among the primitive classic stamps of the British Empire". A copy of the article accompanies the lot.
