Putnam/Aden/Arabia/Asia/On board the Bark Argentine, from his wife in Rachel in Manchester, New Hampshire, with large despatch c.d.s., straight-line "paid", red "24", red Paid London transit datestamp (11.3) and, on reverse, Boston (22.2), New York (23.2) transits and Aden arrival of 10 Sept.; fine. The earliest known letter from the United States to Aden. A showpiece for the advanced Arabia Collector. Photo

Note: The diary of Rachel Hurd Putnam, 1855-56, in which she writes affectingly of her daily life whilst her merchant captain husband was at sea, is now held in the Peaboby Essex Museum in Salem, Massachussets.
