Line Engraved Proofs and Essays
Prince Consort Essays
The unfinished imperforate proof, printed in dull grey-blue, with full original gum; some gum wrinkling or creasing with a couple of trivial edge imperfections. A fine example of this very rare essay. Specialised DP71 (1), £35,000
Chartwell, June 2011
Note: These essays were prepared by Henry Archer in connection with his offer to produce surface printed postage stamps and perforate them at more favorable terms than the existing contract with Perkins, Bacon. Edwin Hill, the supervisor in the Stamp Department at Somerset House, advised against the use of the Queen's head. Therefore Archer chose to use the head of the Prince Consort.
