Postal History
1683 (17 May) entire letter written by "Robert Humfreys" and addressed "This for Mr. John Fisher at his house in the Broad Sanctuary over against Westm(inste)r Abbey, King streete end", on reverse a fine strike of the very rare first type Government "Dockwra" mark "payd/peny/post/t" of the Temple office with a Westminster office "W/Mor/8" transit time mark and a manuscript "4L" (indicating that the letter was handled at 4pm by the Penny Post's Lime Street Office) alongside. The letter concerns the addressee's "sister child" and her debts to Sir William Bowles; fine. A significant Great Britain Postal History rarity. Only about twenty-five examples of the first type Dockwra are recorded with the vast majority being in archives
