1849 (2 May) entire letter from the Sardinian Consulate in Calcutta to the Sardinian Consul-General in Gibraltar, marked "p Steamer Oriental", rated "S2/-" in red and "1/8", showing framed "india" in red and boxed "to/pay" in black with, on reverse, unclear despatch d.s. and arrival double-arc d.s. (25.6)

Note: This letter weighed ¾oz. and was therefore double rate. The double rate was 1 Rupee (2/- sterling), hence "S2/-", to Alexandria. The second part of the journey was treated as unpaid, hence "1/8" double the rate from Alexandria to Gibraltar and the boxed To Pay marking applied at destination.
