After World War II, the United Nations created a trusteeship to administer Italian Somaliland as the United Nations Trust Territory of Somalia. On 27 January 1950, Italy was granted financial control of the territory. It introduced a new currency, the somalo, equivalent in value to the East African shilling. Notes denominated in East African shillings and Italian lire were exchanged for the new somalo banknotes from 22 May to 22 August 1950 (5 notes)
