Bank of England, Matthew Marshall (1835-1864), £5, London, 3 February 1846, serial number JK18619, black and white, ornate crowned vignette of Britannia top left, 'I promise to pay to Mr. Matt. Marshall or Bearer on demand the sum of Five Pounds', value in black tablet low left, printed serial number, date, manuscript signature below,
(EPM B203a, Pick 221), in PMG holder 20 Very Fine, toning, the note was discovered in a campaign chest that has remained in the same family since the 1860's. It was not until 1962 that a secret compartment in the chest was discovered and the £5 revealed. The note was sent to a local bank for advice (a letter referring to this is included in the lot).All Marshall notes are rare and this note represented a significant sum at the time.
