Auction: 21007 - British and World Coins Autumn Auction
Lot: 210
Italy, Genoa, 8-Lire, 1796 [1796], stop after date, "Stemma Nuovo", Saint John the Baptist standing left, rev. crowned shield of arms, security edge, 33.10g, 12h (CNI 7; MIR 309/4; Dav. 1370; KM 249), adjustment marks to reverse, otherwise toned, very fine, the extremely rare original issue
Examples struck in 1814 bearing the 1796 date exhibit a star at the end of the obverse legend. This provides a most interesting snapshot of the timing of this 'European Grand Tour' given the overwhelming surfeit of later issues encountered in present commerce
