Auction: 21004 - The Sir Rodney Sweetnam KCVO CBE Collection of English Gold Coins and Other Properties - Conducted behind closed doors
Lot: 41

William III (1694-1702), 'Fine-Work' Five-Guineas, 1701 DECIMO TERTIO, second laureate head right, rev. crowned shields cruciform, plain emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, + •+ DECVS • ET • TVTAMEN • ANNO • REGNI • DECIMO • TERTIO downwards on edge, 41.80g, 5h (Spink 3456; Schneider II, 480; MCE 172; King 138: Stratos 192), a most handsome coin with orangey-red tone overlying playfully lustrous fields, a touch of rub to portrait, otherwise good extremely fine, the reverse better and proudly struck-up but with a trace of adjustment to Lion of Nassau, in NGC 'Sweetnam' holder, graded MS62+ (Cert. #5878635-006)

The Chalaza collection dispersed in our 'Stratos' Sale (15 September 2020) possessed two examples of the 1701 Fine Work issue with differing edge letter formations. The present example is numerical superior to both previous coins, and offers a further 'castaing' sub-variety. Given the number coined and now surviving this is not wholly surprising, albeit this TYPE is rarely encountered in such a presentable grade as this.
