Saint Anne German High School was established in St Petersburg in 1736 to serve the children of the German population of the city. Many famous people attended the school including the great jeweller, Peter Carl Fabergé who may have collaborated with the designer of this medal. Joseph König, after whom this prize was named, was the director of Saint Anne's from 1884-1910 and was responsible for the large increase in students during his tenure. After the October Revolution in 1918 the school was nationalized and gradually eliminated its German studies.
