Duncan Andews was born 16 October 1914. He joined the 1st Kaffrarian Rifles in 1940 at the age of 25, transferring to the South African Medical Corps five months later. He served with this unit in the North Africa campaign, being posted as missing on 26 June 1942. Possibly lost during the Fall of Tobruk in which a number of South African troops were taken. He was confirmed as a Prisoner of War 19 November 1942 and repatriated on 12 May 1943. He continued to serve, earning the Efficiency Medal on 5 October 1945.
