Jacobus Andries Pretorius was born in Elliot, South Africa on 16 October 1893. He served with the 5th Regiment, 5th Mounted Brigade during the German South West Africa Campaign; there are additional references to him serving in Bothas Light Horse. During the Second World War he enlisted with the Military Police Corps on 4 July 1941 and served mainly in East London, South Africa in the rank of Lance Corporal. Promoted Corporal on 1 December 1941, Pretorius was demobilised on 30 March 1947; sold together with copied research including service and attestation papers as well as a post-war photograph.
