Ernest Bryant was born in London, England and served with the Rand Rifles from 16 October 1914 - 28 June 1915. He then served with the 2nd South African Infantry Regiment from 30 October 1915. He spent much of the war ill with Malaria, which he caught in Nyasaland. Finally on 25 December 1917 he was discharged and labelled permanently unfit for tropical service; sold together with copied service, medical and attestation papers.
