John Thomas Hughes was born in Cardiganshire, Wales. Early in the First World War he served with the 7th (Kimberley) Regiment. Later transferring to the South African Infantry, further campaigning with the 2nd Regiment in Egypt and France. Promoted Acting Lance-Corporal, he also received serious burns to his left arm and ankle as a result of an accident on 15 January 1918; invalided as a result on 21 March 1918 having been pronounced unfit for further military service; sold together with copied research including medical records and service records including confirmation of a Silver War Badge, S.A. No. 864.
