Harry Bert was born in London. Enlisted with the Divisional Signal Company, Rand Light Infantry on 22 September 1916. Posted to East Africa Bert suffered from bouts of both malaria and anaemia, being discharged unfit for tropical service on 17 September 1917; sold together with copied research including service and attestation records.
