William Frederick Barnes was born at Blackheath, Kent in 1867 and was a footman upon his enlistment in the 4th Hussars on 16 September 1886. Transferred to the Military Mounted Police in October 1891, he was promoted Corporal on 24 July 1899 before serving in South Africa from 22 October 1899-12 November 1902. Having spent just 100 days at home, he served in Egypt from 21 February 1903-19 March 1904. Barnes was discharged on 5 September 1907, intending to live in Manor Park, East Ham; sold together with copied service record.
