Robert Arkless was born at St Mary's, Gateshead, Durham in October 1874 and enlisted in the 10th Hussars at Newcastle on 29 November 1892. He served in South Africa from 6 November 1899-30 August 1902, being attached to the 6th Dragoons for a portion of his service. Having been in the Army Reserve, he was discharged on 28 November 1904; sold together with copied service record.
