The 2nd Battalion, 5th Gurkha (Rifle) Regiment was the only Gurkha regiment to take part in the Hazara campaign of 1891. However, the Battalion was debarred from taking part in operations on the North-West Frontier 1897-98, due to a high percentage of its soldiers being on leave in Nepal; although it did provide a significant number of men to serve with the Gurkha Scouts that were raised for the campaign.
