The 1st Battalion, 5th Gurkha Rifles was one of three Gurkha Battalions that served with distinction throughout the Gallipoli campaign, which led to the Regiment being awarded the 'Royal' title in 1921.

The 2nd Battalion, 7th Gurkha Rifles formed part of the garrison that capitulated to Turkish forces at Kut-al-Amara in April 1916.
