William Harris served as a Drummer in the 7th Regiment of Foot (Royal Fusiliers) with the regimental number 1709. Posted to the Crimea with his regiment in 1854 and is confirmed to have served during the bloody battles of Alma and Inkerman. Alma in particular caused severe casualties with 39 dead and 179 wounded, totalling fifty percent of the regiment's effective strength.
During the final offensive of the war, the attack on Great Redan on 8 September 1855, Harris was killed in action. He is one of only twelve Drummer's confirmed killed during the conflict; sold together with copied casualty roll and medal roll.
